Avalancheros Comedy Group to Perform at Marquette

An improv comedy group featuring Marquette alum and star of the NBC sitcom Community Danny Pudi will perform at 9 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the AMU ballrooms. The group, called the “Avalancheros,” will perform in honor of National Marquette Day.

The Avalancheros are comprised of several Marquette alumni and comedians who are now based in the Los Angeles area. In addition to Pudi, the Avalancheros feature Pat Finn, Chris Marrs, Kevin Farley and John Farley. The Farleys are brothers of the late Chris Farley, also a Marquette alum and comedian, who starred in several movies and on Saturday Night Live.

According to Kevin Farley, Avalancheros members first got their start in comedy while attending Marquette. Since then, they have each individually appeared in numerous television shows, movies and commercials, as well as performed at comedy festivals around the country.

The group has performed at Marquette several times since reconnecting through the acting community in Los Angeles. Their name is a nod to the Avalanche, a popular campus dive bar that closed in 1997.

The event is free and open to all Marquette students.

MxMU continues tradition of great music on campus

With all the great music brought to campus by MU Unplugged, it might be hard to remember all the talented musicians we’ve previously had on campus. In fact, many of the acts that Marquette has featured over the years have gone on to achieve fame and success.

Don’t believe us? Take a look for yourself.

Starting with the most recent, Hellogoodbye, the indie pop group known for their 2007 hit single “Here (In Your Arms)” came to Marquette in March of 2012. They even tweeted about it!

Stepping farther back in to musical guests of years past, MUSG welcomed Sara Bareilles in March of 2011. After her appearance at Marquette, Sara would go on to become a Grammy nominated artist, with her music featured on many TV shows and movies. Take a look at Sara’s Marquette performance here:

In April 2010, Girl Talk, famous DJ known for his mash-up style remixes performed at Marquette in April 2010 at our very own Alumni Memorial Union Ballrooms.

And now, fast forward to 2014 the tradition of great music at Marquette continues. MU Unplugged, Marquette University Student Government’s coffee house concert series, resumes tonight with a three-part music festival – M x MU. Featuring great bands and Marquette’s own student talent, M x MU kicks off at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 and continues on Feb. 13 and 20 in the first floor lobby of the Alumni Memorial Union. Who knows, maybe one day you can say that you saw Marrow and Fever Fever before they made it big!

Also called “Benachin” meaning “one pot”, jollof rice is a popular dish in many parts of West Africa. Nigerian tomato stew and its aromatic spices are a welcome accompaniment to any meal or festive spread in Nigeria. Brown chicken stew is full vegetables that give it an attractive color. Efo/vegetable stew, a traditional Nigerian recipe for a stew of vegetables and greens in a tomato-based sauce flavored with chilies, rounds out the soupcategory. Of course, no taste of Africa could be complete without delicious fried plantains.

If you are looking to expand your cultural knowledge through food and music, come to Taste of Africa.
