MUSG to host event celebrating African culture and cuisine

Marquette University Student Government and the African Student Association will host “Taste of Africa” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9 in Marquette Place in the AMU.

Spend the evening enjoying a sampling of diverse African foods as well as a DJ playing a mix of African music and recent hits. Featured dishes at this buffet of culture and cuisine include jollof rice, Nigerian tomato stew, brown chicken stew, efo/vegetable stew and fried plantains.

Also called “Benachin” meaning “one pot”, jollof rice is a popular dish in many parts of West Africa. Nigerian tomato stew and its aromatic spices are a welcome accompaniment to any meal or festive spread in Nigeria. Brown chicken stew is full vegetables that give it an attractive color. Efo/vegetable stew, a traditional Nigerian recipe for a stew of vegetables and greens in a tomato-based sauce flavored with chilies, rounds out the soupcategory. Of course, no taste of Africa could be complete without delicious fried plantains.
