MUSG approves Father Naus Annual Kindness Day, elects to SOF and Budget Committees

At Senate on Thursday evening, MUSG discussed Recommendation 5. This piece of legislation was authored by Senator Hansen, and proposes the establishment of an annual “Father Naus Day of Kindness.” In loving memory of late Father Naus, the Day of Kindness would fall on the first Tuesday following Sept. 22 annually. Senate passed Recommendation 5 unanimously.

MUSG also had to elect a senator to the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee is comprised of senators responsible for reviewing the MUSG budget, approving the budget, and making moves to change the budget. The Budget Committee also approves large purchases.  Senator Matthew Walker, Arts & Sciences ‘16, was the only candidate running for the Budget Committee and won his seat with a vote of 29-1-0.

Two seats were also open on the SOF (Student Organization Funding) Committee. The SOF committee discusses and determines fund allocations for undergraduate programs. The committee fields funding requests and determines that programs receiving have both financial need and are committed to bettering the Marquette community.  The candidates running for the SOF committee were: Senator Baker, Communication ‘15, Senator Evans, Business ‘17, Senator Manjee Arts & Sciences ‘17 , Senator Markun, Communication ‘16 and Senator O’Rourke, Arts & Sciences ‘17.

After debate and questions, Senator Markun was elected with 17 votes. Following five rounds of inconclusive voting excluding Senator Markun, Senator Manjee was elected to fill the final committee seat on the sixth round, also with 17 votes.

Both newly elected SOF committee members impressed MUSG with their remarks. “Each [student] organization deserves a fair chance at using our funds,” Senator Markun said. When asked what one word would reflect how they would contribute to the SOF committee, Senator Manjee responded “rationality”.

Senate adjourned at 9:49 p.m.
