Health Services and Counseling Center to make services more available to students

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 16, 2012) – This week’s senate meeting began with a presentation by Dr. Michael Zebrowski, director of Marquette’s Counseling Center, and Dr. Carolyn Smith, executive director of Student Health Services.  Zebrowski and Smith discussed anxiety, stress and general health information as it pertains to the Marquette community.

Dr. Smith talked of future plans for Student Health Services including STD awareness month in April. She plans on doing more in regards to sexual education and safety.  Dr. Smith also wants to work more on engaging both the student health advisory board and students.

Both Dr. Smith and Dr. Zebrowski were very open and enthusiastic in answering student questions and addressing concerns. Both are currently working on making both centers as beneficial as possible for students.

President Joey Ciccone announced that he met with Marquette’s new executive vice president to update her on the many projects MUSG is working on. Ciccone encouraged senators to continue to spread the word about the upcoming diversity roundtables.

Vice President Trent Carlson reminded senators that the SOF deadline is Friday, March 2. Carlson also met with Marquette’s director of technology to discuss professors’ use of D2L. Focus groups on this issue will be held this spring and all are encouraged to participate.

Student government committees were hard at work this week. Business and administration senator Allison Kruschke announced that her committee is looking into finding new places for students to obtain information on campus. The committee is very interested in helping students engage in social media to alert students of their events and activities. The academic committee is currently in the process of proposing new majors including art history and reorganizing the core of common studies.   Student organizations are meeting with the Hunger Clean Up committee this week to discuss their ideas for this year’s event.

The meeting concluded with the following event announcements and reminders:

  • Night of Chocolate will be Saturday, Feb. 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. in the AMU ballrooms. Tickets are still available for $8 in the Brooks Lounge with a valid Marquette ID.
  • Morgan Spurlock, the man behind the movie Supersize Me, will discuss his new film, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Thursday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. in the AMU ballrooms.
  • Applications for the MUSG Communications Department are due Friday, March 9. Applications are available on the MUSG website.
  • Midnight Run is hosting a late night grill out Friday, February 17, in front of McCormick Hall from 12 to 2 a.m.
  • Jobs are currently available within the Office of Student Development, applications are online.
